What Does the Study Teach?

What About the Trinity? is a question that Latter-day Saints often ask born-again Christians. How should born-again Christians respond? In this lesson, we introduce the key ideas and biblical motivations that prepare born-again Christians “to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you” (1 Peter 3:15).

Born-again Christians describe the relationship between the Father, Son, and Spirit with a word – the Trinity. Latter-day Saints also describe the relationship between the Father, Son, and Spirit with a word – the Godhead. In this lesson, we will describe the LDS doctrine of the Godhead and point out several challenges.

In this lesson, we explore the promise of the LDS Godhead, namely, that families can be together forever. From there, we discover the Bible’s teaching on God’s family and how born-again Christians can re-orient LDS thinking on the subject.

When born-again Christians are asked, What About the Trinity? they have a golden opportunity to “proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9). By proclaiming the excellencies of God’s oneness, born-again Christians can direct their LDS friends to the unique privilege of knowing the only true God.

As we “proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9), we need to understand how God’s Persons work together to accomplish salvation. In this lesson, subtitled, “The Story of Two Pourings,” we see how God the Son propitiated God the Father’s wrath and how God the Spirit gives new life.

When Latter-day Saints ask, What About the Trinity? they can have a wide variety of motivations springing from a broad range of convictions. In this lesson, we help born-again Christians use the trinitarian question to start gospel conversations that are sensitive, godward, and loving.
